My name is Vera, and I am a proud daughter of Cape Verdean immigrants, embodying the Cape Verdean motto of “sampadjuda” — the one who always helps.
Following in the footsteps of my ancestors, I too emigrated in search of adventure and to improve my English. The move to the UK was part of my three-year plan.
I moved to Slough after being promoted from a general assistant to a customer service position. This was a significant career step just a few months after arriving in the UK, and I wasn’t confident in my skills due to the language barrier. The corporate world felt cold and unwelcoming, especially while supporting CEOs and executives with their demanding schedules—a stark contrast to my humble upbringing.
In Slough, I encountered a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds. Many people, like me, were adapting to a new culture and language. Their kindness and warmth made me feel welcome and comfortable, significantly boosting my confidence. Slough buzzes with humane and warm people, vastly different from the London corporate world.
After a year in Slough, a new opportunity arose—a manager position. Encouraged by my colleagues, members, and company, I decided to take the leap and apply for it. I got the promotion, altering my three-year plan forever.
As much as you try to plan your next steps, life often takes unexpected turns. Trust yourself and embark on the journey. Everyone is adapting to something new—be it a new language, culture, or software. Embrace the change and have faith in your resilience.
