5 years ago, I moved to the bustling metropolis of London and embarked on a journey to pursue a career in architecture and the built environment. A year ago, a new chapter unfolded as I was given the opportunity to work in the design and fit-out of a new PlusX Innovation co-working hub in Slough.
I had never heard of Slough before. But to my surprise it was an area brimming with potential, great transportation links, relaxed commute, and hope to be further developed to a vibrant hub for residents, businesses, and visitors. So it immediately ticked some boxes, at least on a first sight.
The project kicked off, and I started commuting to Slough almost daily from west London. With each passing day, I delved deeper into the community, forging connections and friendships within the walls of the project space I was delivering. Together, we embarked on a journey of creativity and collaboration, breathing life into the design and fit-out of the new office space.
Along the way, I had the privilege of crossing paths with local artists whose talents added depth and character to our vision. Together, we transformed mere concepts into tangible realities, infusing the space with creativity and innovation.
When the project reached its peak workload, just before opening, I was introduced to a local young Architect. She joined our team shortly after, with a shared passion for design. Before long, her circle of friends followed suit, adding their unique talents and energy to our growing community.
I am still meeting people, creating more connections or even taping to my existing connections for help and advice. The co-working hub was welcomed in the area and it soon felt like it became a beacon of creativity, collaboration, and community. I still come to the office every week, not out of obligation, but because I feel I am part of a network. What began as a professional endeavour had evolved into something far more profound—a sense of belonging.
